Phillip Whack is a native of Columbia, SC. It was there that he was a product of his environment and grew up hearing the likes of Miles Davis, Nat King Cole, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Doobie Bros, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Louie Armstrong, Grover Washington Jr, James Brown, and many others in the family household. By constantly absorbing all of this music, it would prove to have a profound influence in his interest in music.
He went on to continue his studies at Brevard College in Brevard, NC, where he studied saxophone and clarinet with Dr.David Kirby and Dr. Jon Gudmundson. As he honed his skills in college, he began his true quest in music. Although Phillip was initially a classically trained musician, he started to get submerged in the recordings by artist such as John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Freddie Hubbard, Kirk Whalum, Weather Report, Tower of Power, etc. Those and many other recordings would change his life and direction in music forever.
As a professional, Phillip has gone on to record or share the stage with the likes of The Glenn Miller Orchestra, Maceo Parker, Clarence Clemons, Fantasia, Fred Wesley, Wycliffe Gordon, Tom Browne, Lenny Kravitz, Branford Marsalis, The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Ojays, Dennis Edwards and the Temptations Review, and many others. He's performed in 48 states, Asia, Europe, Canada, and Africa. Here is what he has to say about his Eastman 52nd Street tenor saxophone. "Eastman Saxophones have everything that a saxophonist would want..They play well in all registers from top to bottom...They allow the player to be extremely flexible and with great intonation and pitch...And most of all, they allow you to sound like you"

Here is what Keith Kelly says about the Eastman 52nd Street Tenor Saxophone.
I’ve played a vintage horn, ever since I picked up the tenor saxophone. I had found that modern horns lacked the power, the range of tone color, and the overall ‘umph’ that I loved so much about playing vintage horns. The Eastman 52nd St Tenor Saxophone was a revelation to me – a modern horn, with all the precision key-work and attention to detail, coupled with the overall sound and feel of a vintage saxophone. When I first played my Eastman with the musicians who know me and my music best, they raved about how I “sounded more like myself” and how much “clearer and focused” my sound became. I feel so lucky to be able to play this horn every day and to share this hybrid of “vintage and modern” with my students and other professionals.

Multi-instrumentalist, educator and composer Erica von Kleist began her career as a saxophonist and flautist in the New York jazz scene. A native of Connecticut, Erica moved to the city to study at the renowned Juilliard School and in 2004 earned the first bachelor’s degree in jazz in the school’s history. After graduation, Erica’s next ten years were met with performances, tours and several recordings with various artists including the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Chris Potter, Sean Jones, Rufus Reid, The Addams Family on Broadway among others. Honored with two ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Awards, several mentions in Downbeat's annual Readers and Critics Polls, and the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center, Erica extended her scope as a bandleader with the release of four commercial albums, one as a co-collaboration with tap dancer DeWitt Fleming Jr., live at Dizzy's Club NYC.
A teacher for over 20 years, Erica has always had a passion for education. In 2019 she released "A Cool Approach to Jazz Theory" a jazz theory workbook that has been used as a curriculum for middle and high school jazz programs worldwide. As a clinician, Erica has lectured in music business and performance at The Juilliard School, UNC Greensboro, among others, has been an adjudicator for the Essentially Ellington Festival, and a faculty member for Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz Program.
During her ten-year stint living in Whitefish, MT, Erica began several business endeavors including a nonprofit organization that brought live music to nursing homes and care facilities and a booking agency that provided live music for private events and weddings. She also paired up with some local filmmakers and writers and in 2020 co-produced an award-winning musical comedy film "Your Musical is Cancelled. The Musical!". Having sparked her love of comedy, Erica is now back in NYC developing her work as a one-woman jazz comedy writer and performer. In addition to cultivating new songs and ideas, she is also the Managing Director of the International Association of Jazz Arrangers & Composers (ISJAC), and a music business faculty member at the Manhattan School of Music.

Most artists who put a “Doc” in their name do it out of cleverness, for marketing reasons, or as a crafty way to express their mastery of their instrument or vibe. Since the release of his 2003 debut Saxappeal, Phillip “Doc” Martin has all that down pat, wowing audiences everywhere from Blues Alley in D.C. to the St. Lucia Jazz Festival and the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival and earning inspiring amounts of airplay (including on XM Watercolors and The Weather Channel) for tracks like “Deep Pockets” and the title track from his 2009 set Realization. His latest Innervision Records release Pocket Love further establishes this powerful expertise via his dynamic flow and tight, funky old school driven alto vibe.
While many independent artists with cool, successful “day jobs” prefer to avoid references to them when they talk about their music, Martin is the complete opposite, fully embracing the inspirational factor of being a top notch practitioner in two very different professions. Beyond his ever-expanding musical fan base, hundreds of patients in the Washington DC area know him as “Dr. Martin,” a board certified dentist in group practice there. He called his previous album Good Day At Work (2013) to reflect his artful balance between the rigours of life as a dentist and the sometimes exhilarating, often challenging grind of being an independent artist and performer. One of the insert photos in the packaging of Pocket Love finds him enjoying the best of both worlds, embracing his treasured alto while wearing his green scrubs and cap.
“My first love was always playing the sax, and I continue to strive to be the best sounding alto player you’ve ever heard. If it’s unheard of that a saxophone artist also wants to be the best dentist you’ve ever gone to, that’s a testament to the hard work I have put in so that I may enjoy these two amazing careers. In both worlds, success comes from working with incredible, dedicated people and developing inspiring, enduring relationships.”

Bennie Maupin is best known for his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis’ classic “Bitches Brew” album, as well as other Miles Davis recordings such as “Big Fun,” “Jack Johnson,” and “On the Corner.” He was a founding member of Herbie Hancock’s seminal band The Headhunters, as well as a performer and composer in Hancock’s influential Mwandishi band. Born in 1940, Maupin started playing clarinet, later adding saxophone, flute, and most notably the bass clarinet to his formidable arsenal of woodwind instruments. Upon moving to New York in 1962, he freelanced with groups led by Marion Brown, Pharoah Saunders, and Chick Corea, and played regularly with Roy Haynes and Horace Silver. He also recorded with McCoy Tyner, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Eddie Henderson, and Woody Shaw to name only a few.
Maupin’s own discography as a leader includes a well-received recording for ECM Records, “The Jewel in The Lotus” (1974), “Slow Traffic to the Right” (1976), “Moonscapes” both on Mercury Records (1978), and “Driving While Black” on Intuition, (1998). The instrumentation of Maupin’s current group The Bennie Maupin Ensemble, harkens back to the tradition of great saxophone-bass-drum trios, such as the group led by Sonny Rollins with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones. While echoes of the great John Coltrane can be heard in Maupin’s work, one can also discern the influences of Yusef Lateef, Sonny Rollins, and Eric Dolphy, as well as Maupin’s contemporaries like Wayne Shorter and the late Joe Henderson. Maupin’s approach to his music is intentional and profound, yet alive in the interpretation of the moment. He maintains active performing and teaching careers in Europe, and the US. Bennie Maupin currently resides in the Los Angeles area.

Back in 2009, Brian got the opportunity to tour with The Motown Legendary Funk Brothers which is an experience he will cherish for the rest of my life. The Funk Brothers (including Bob Babbitt, Uriel Jones, and Eddie Willis) were the back up band on most Motown albums including The Temptations, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, and countless others. The documentary ‘Standing In The Shadows of Motown’ is the story of The Funk Brothers. During his stay with the Funk Brothers he formed a friendship with the bands lead singer, Delbert Nelson and soon after they created the band – Delbert & The Commotions. Just last March, they released their debut album entitled ‘Let Me See Ya Dance’. With this album hot off the press, they are currently in the works to record their second album which will hopefully be released in early 2014.

Read what’s being said about this Las Vegas saxophonist: “…When I walked into Pearl’s, the piece “Brujo” was in full swing. It was a swift piece that featured Charles McNeal primarily on soprano sax with Wally kicking and stomping on the drums, pushing Charles to great heights. The group was very tight and seemed to like that tempo. Charles’s alto solo had a contemporary edge on “Tony,” a piece dedicated to Tony Williams.” “…Charles was into a very avant-garde mode that took the rest of the group in that fast-clip direction.” “…before slowing the pace for the first of Nelson’s compositions, “A Penthouse Dawn,” admirably performed by the orchestra and alto soloist Charles McNeal.”

From Mike about the Andres Eastman 52nd Street ESS 652 Soprano Saxophone: I absolutely love my Andreas Eastman 52nd St. Soprano with the curved neck! I’ve owned, and played on, a number of other top brand soprano saxophones, and have for thirty plus years been searching for a soprano that plays the way I dreamed a soprano would sound and feel! The ESS 652 52nd Street has a wonderful sound, is ergonomically designed to feel very comfortable in your hands, has superb intonation, fantastic technical facility, and has the free blowing flexibility as if I’m playing my tenor! I have finally found the soprano for me, and I could not recommend this horn more. It will be the direction I send all of my students. Thank you Andreas Eastman for building such a fantastic instrument!

The ease of response gives the sound a special singing quality that I have come to expect from professional level saxophones. I love the Eastman 52nd Street Alto Saxophone so much that I intend to make it my primary performing instrument after many years of using other major saxophone brands. I can’t wait to try the soprano and tenor!

Best known for his dynamic groovy melodies and his over-the-top candy colored apparel, Aaron “Candyman” West has become a Contemporary Jazz saxophone sensation. From recordings with jazz giant Stanley Clarke and pop icon Macy Gray to lead saxophonist in NBC’s Carson Daly show band, critics and fans alike garner accolades to the most sought after saxophone entertainer of today. “An incredibly gifted musician who has the ability to combine the best of R&B, pop, neosoul and jazz “– Keaton Hoffman/ Producer. From his early days in Chicago where he played in a church choir under the direction of gospel veteran Smokie Norful, Aaron drew inspiration from the rich musical traditions of that city, including jazz, R&B and blues. He attended music school at University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University and was recognized quickly as a rising star when he arrested audiences with a compelling performance of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move on Up” at the 2001 Chicago Blues festival. Shortly afterwards, Aaron moved to Los Angeles and caught the attention of world-renown bassist and film composer Stanley Clarke. Impressed with Aaron’s unique tenor sound, the bassist invited him to play on network television soundtracks for the HBO hit series “Soul Food” and for Warner Bros. pilot, “The Big Time”. Following, Aaron performed a series of recordings with Macy Gray including a theme soundtrack for the television hit series, “Desperate Housewives”. In 2004 Danny Masterson, actor and star of “That 70’s Show” invited Aaron to join the featured jazz night at the exclusive Los Angeles club called Guys (presently Guys & Dolls), which was voted “Best Club Night” consecutively by Los Angeles Magazine. There he performed weekly live jazz, R&B and pop sets sharing the stage with everyone from John Mayer, Roy Hargrove, Christina Aguilera, Marcus Miller, India Arie and Jodeci. Later, in 2012 Aaron delivered an all-star live performance with Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. Later on, Aaron landed the coveted spot as lead saxophonist for NBC’s Carson Daly Show house band. Drawing on the influences of legends like John Coltrane, Stevie Wonder, Michael Brecker and Grover Washington Jr. Aaron fashions the perfect contemporary jazz sampler, and has just released his latest Contemporary Jazz sampler titled, “Say It Again”. The Eastman Nickel Tenor has superb intonation and an amazing contemporary sound. Any serious recording artist knows that it’s rare to find an instrument that captures both personality and clarity. This is clearly my saxophone of choice. “I believe that music should be fun…”, states the musician, composer and performer.

Saxophonist Chris Farr graduated from University of the Arts in 1995 and since then has been a highly sought after performer and educator. Over the past 15 years he has performed, toured and recorded with the likes of Elvis Costello, Jill Scott, Sting, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, The Roots, Teddy Pendergrass, Grover Washington, Gerald Veasley & Maynard Ferguson. For the last several years, I have been playing the Andreas Eastman 52nd Street model tenor saxophone. It is a superior instrument. It is effortless to play, while still possessing a rich sound and outstanding intonation. Thank you to the folks at Eastman for producing such a fine instrument.

Todd says the following about his Eastman 52nd Street Bari. “ I have recently purchased an Eastman 52nd Street Baritone Saxophone. I’ve owned several different models of baritone saxophones throughout the years, at least six or seven horns, but the Eastman is beyond compare to anything I’ve previously played. It is lighter weight, yet has a big, fat, and dark sound. In fact it has the tonal core and an all-around response much like a tenor sax. I should mention that the intonation is fantastic! I like the look of the unpolished brass, and it’s nice not worrying over lacquer failure and scratches. The rolled tones holes on these instruments feels like blowing on the old Conn 10-Ms, as they had the same design, however the 52nd Street horns are more robust construction, especially with the double-braced key pads on the low-notes, and as well they have the hi F# and low A keys. As a bonus, the case construction is great too. If you haven’t tried these horns, you’re missing out on an opportunity to achieve a great deal of personal satisfaction at a price that is unreasonably affordable. I’m a convert and give the 52nd Street Baritone Saxophone two big thumbs up! I give it my complete endorsement. You will not be disappointed.
Eastman saxophonist and music educator, Anthony “Tony” White began his music career on clarinet before moving to tenor saxophone in high school. Inspired by musical greats John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Ernie Watts, Stanley Turrentine, Joe Henderson, Jan Garbarek, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock to name a few. Mr. White went on to study music at The University of California, Riverside where he performed in the concert and jazz ensembles, adding soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, flute and the Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI) to his arsenal of instruments. It was during his college career that he began performing in groups ranging from pop to rock and hip hop and Latin jazz. “Creating great music is my objective when performing in any style,” says Tony.
During his college tenure, Tony began working with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s “All City Band.” He marched in the band during his senior year in high school and was awestruck with the sound and the power of the band which led him to volunteer his time to work with the band. He started off as the “lunch person” and learned the inside of music education from his mentors. It was during this time that he realized the importance of the power of music and devoted his life to music performance and music education.
In 1991, Tony became the music teacher at John C. Fremont High School. With the help of a dedicated principal and support from the faculty, he was able to develop a strong comprehensive music program in South Central Los Angeles where there was not one before. The bands performed at the Playboy Jazz Festival, Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, the Pantages Theater and more giving the students of the Fremont High School Music department experiences that would last a lifetime. They were also able to perform with the likes of Lionel Hampton, Plas Johnson, Poncho Sanchez and Justo Almario.
Tony has developed an educational component in the Los Angeles Unified School District – Beyond the Bell Branch known as “Music and Entertainment Education.” There he works to develop partnerships with various music and entertainment organizations; assist teachers with creating and maintaining arts education programs; coordinates and develops LAUSD All District music ensembles (marching, jazz, mariachi, etc.).
Through all of his teaching, he maintained his performing artist schedule by studying and playing with the likes of Kenny Burrell, Jackson Brown, Bernie Worrell, Buddy Collette, Billy Mitchell, Gerald Wilson, Billy Mitchell, John Stephens, Bill Green, Dr. Art Davis, John Ehlis, Jose Arellano, Al Viola, Bobby Rodriguez, The Mambo Combo, East Los Angeles Sax Quartet and others.
In his career, Mr. White has been a Bravo Award Finalist and Fulfillment Fund Awardee for his work in music education, The UC Riverside Chancellor Award, Humanitarian Award from the Omni Youth Music Awards, L.A. Music Week Honoree, recognition by the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education for his work in music education and the International Association for Jazz Education for being an Outstanding Saxophonist and educator. Tony released his first recording called “The Tony White Project” in 2009, which features different approaches to standard jazz classics such as Little Sunflower, Equinox and Cold Duck Time. He is currently working with jazz pianist Gary Fukushima in a duo format around the Los Angeles area with plans on recording soon. Tony also continues to be a free-lance saxophonist in the greater Los Angeles area where he resides with his wife Kia and their children, Anthony Nikos Ross and Sarah Georgia.

Jim Stranahan is a Denver, Colorado-based jazz recording artist with Tapestry Records. His discography includes an appearance on “Dreams Untold” and “Transformation”, two CDs released by his internationally known son, Colin Stranahan. Mr. Stranahan has released two projects, “Free For All” (2010), featuring all original compositions and “Migration to Higher Ground” (2014). Both CDs have received national acclaim such as in this review from Raul da Gama of Jazz Da Gama: “…how does he make a little big band sound like a really big band? The answer is in the music, which is intelligently composed and inspired-not only the music of Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, and Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond - but also Mr. Stranahan’s own compositions themselves…As an instrumentalist, Mr. Stranahan is a fine winds player. He plays his instrument as if he were a painter wielding brushes of different dimensions and characteristics. This gives his music a superb flow of line and dynamic.”
Over his 40+ year career as a bandleader and musician in the Denver area, Mr. Stranahan has performed with Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Suzanne Sommers, Lee Konitz and Bobby Shew. He is a frequently featured performer at the legendary Dazzle Jazz Club in Denver performing his original compositions and arrangements. Small’s Jazz Club in New York City is another performance venue in his repertoire. Mr. Stranahan is a sought after clinician, adjudicator and private saxophone instructor in the Denver area. He has worked in the larger Denver metro school districts doing clinics, workshops, rehearsing various ensembles and sectional rehearsals. Many of his past students, public and private, have gone on to become successful professional musicians.

Gabriel Sears has established himself as a leader among the new generation of brass musicians, captivating his audiences by effortlessly combining virtuosity and musicianship with distinctive entertainment. Heralded by the United States Air Force Band as an "amazing talent" (MSG Burts, 2006) after being the first brass musician to win the Colonel George S. Howard Young Artist Competition, it was evident at an early age that Gabriel would set the new standard in tuba performance. Continuing with his competitive career, Gabriel won 2nd prize in the '08 and '09 Leonard Falcone International Tuba Artist Competition and received a 2011-2012 Fulbright Grant to study tuba performance at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater, und Medien in Hannover, Germany. After moving to Los Angeles, Gabriel competed in the Pasadena Showcase 28th Instrumental Competition in February of 2013, taking 1st place in the brass division.
An avid chamber musician, Gabriel is currently tubist with the Southern California Brass Quintet and the Denali Brass Trio; he has also served as tubist with 2nd Street Brass, Southwest Brass Quintet, the ASU Dixie Devils, and Omni Brass Ensemble, a project with trumpet virtuoso Randolph Lee. You can also find Gabriel regularly performing with West Coast Prost!, a polka- inspired ensemble based in Long Beach, CA.
Gabriel has enjoyed performance seasons with several orchestras in the Phoenix and Los Angeles metropolitan areas and is currently principal tubist for the San Bernardino Symphony under the baton of Maestro Anthony Parnther; he has also had the pleasure of working under the batons of Maestro Gustavo Dudamel and composer John Williams.
Performing more than just ensemble work, Gabriel is also an active soloist. Gabriel gave several recitals while at Arizona State University, two solo performances while in Germany during his Fulbright grant, has had multiple solo appearances in the Los Angeles area, and completed a masterclass and recital tour throughout the state of Arizona in November of 2017.
In addition to his performance activities, Gabriel is dedicated to arts education and received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Arizona State University and earned a Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn School Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. Gabriel is currently serving as Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at California State University Long Beach, Fullerton College, and Irvine Valley College. Gabriel can be heard in major motion picture and television soundtracks; some of which include Disney’s Mulan, The Biggest Little Farm, Men in Black: International, The House With a Clock in Its Walls, and League of Legends among many others. Gabriel has been a student of Norman Pearson, Jens Bjørn-Larsen, Sam Pilafian, Patrick Sheridan, and owes his musical foundation to Donna Schmidt, an Albuquerque, New Mexico area instructor.

Casey Cranford, hailing from Greensboro NC, has been playing music for the joy and experience of learning since his teenage years. At Grimsley High School he studied under the renowned Stefan Stuber, and continued his training after school by improvising in weekly “musical therapy” sessions with his friend Devin Foust, a young man with Down Syndrome. After cutting his teeth in Greensboro, Casey has toured the country with his band Big Something, and has performed on stage with Kamasi Washington, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and members of Umphrey’s McGee and The String Cheese Incident.
What he has to say about 52nd Street Alto “From the first moment I played the 52nd street, I knew I had found what I had been longing for. Without having to search for an old horn, I had a vintage style instrument right at my fingertips. After years of playing modern style horns, the style of the 52nd street alto gave me a literal breath of fresh air. There is a certain freedom that I experience with this horn that I have never had the opportunity to utilize until now. Built like an old-school sax, the 52nd Street provides a warm and deeper tone that fits my playing style better than I would have imagined. I see myself enjoying this horn for the rest of my career.”
Los Angeles-based composer and saxophonist, Randy Gist, is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
As a composer, he has had the privilege of writing music for the theatrical campaigns of "Max Steel", "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", "Despicable me 2", "War Dogs", "Evil Dead" and many others. Randy has also arranged for the Costa Rican National Orchestra.
As a saxophonist, Randy has worked with Kesha; Ricky Martin; American Idol winner Phillip Phillips; appeared on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno; performed with Aloe Blacc; performed with Jamie Foxx & Kelly Rowland for President Barack Obama; been featured numerous times on the Fox hit TV show "Glee;" and performed on the soundtrack to Pixar's "Epic."
Randy is proud to play Eastman Winds Saxophones as well as Beechler Mouthpieces.
Randy has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Western Michigan University; and a Master’s Degree in Studio Jazz Writing from the University of Miami.

A life-long resident of Southern California, Scott Sutherland has been hailed as “the second craziest tuba player I know” by famed American composer, Joan Tower. He is a member of the Redlands Symphony, Riverside Philharmonic and has been spotted in the back row of the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, and San Diego Symphony. Likely due to clerical errors, Scott has performed at the front of the stage as a soloist with the San Diego and Idyllwild Arts Symphony Orchestras, as well as the Riverside and Burbank Philharmonics. He has also recorded for film, television and video game soundtracks, including the major motion pictures Pearl Harbor and Batman vs. Superman (which are the only accomplishments notable to his younger private students).
For 11 years, Scott was a founding member, tubist and pianist of the international touring ensemble, Presidio Brass, for which he continues to work with as a consultant and music arranger. During his time with the quintet, he performed in over 40 states, Canada and China.
Scott can often be found behind his MacBook Pro, slaving away for hours on end adapting music. His arrangements have been performed by ensembles throughout the world, including the Principal Brass of the New York Philharmonic, famed tubist and conductor Roger Bobo, as well as chamber groups from the West Point Band and the “President’s Own” Marine Band. Scott’s “Fantasy on Porgy and Bess” for trumpet and orchestra was commissioned by soloist Barry Perkins and has been performed with the Pacific Symphony (California) and the Aguascalientes Symphony (Mexico).
He began a popular YouTube Channel in 2016 which includes multitrack videos of film, television and video game music, featuring Scott playing euphonium, tuba, cimbasso, piano and percussion. In its first year, the channel was viewed over 500,000 times.
Beyond his performance career, Scott is a passionate and dedicated teacher. He is currently on the faculty at the University of Redlands, Idyllwild Arts Summer Program and Gene Pokorny Low Brass Seminar.
Despite all of this, Scott’s foremost identity, besides being an avid beer and whiskey snob, comes as a husband and father to his beautiful family and he is grateful to come home to Carlsbad, CA where it never fails to be 70 degrees and sunny all year round.
Scott Sutherland is proud to be an Artist and Clinician for the Eastman Music Company.

Bobby Selvaggio is one of the leading alto saxophone voices on today's jazz scene. In the words of pianist Kenny Werner, “Bobby is among the best of players out there,” and legendary saxophonist Joe Lovano praises Bobby by calling him “one of the few young saxophonists on the scene today that captures you with his strong presence, focus, and sound.”
Bobby, who grew up in the Cleveland area, earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from Kent State University. He eventually moved to New York City and earned a master’s degree in jazz performance from the Manhattan School of Music. While in New York, Bobby studied with Joe Lovano, Bobby Watson, Dick Oatts, and Maria Schneider.
After living in New York City and gigging around town at places like the Vanguard, Smalls, and Birdland for four years, Bobby decided to move back to Cleveland with his family. Northeast Ohio has become his home base of operations where Bobby has toured extensively throughout the US and Canada with various working ensembles and musicians. He has dedicated himself to keeping jazz alive in Cleveland and his passion for jazz education has led him to serve as Director of Jazz Studies at Kent State University.
In addition to his work in jazz education, Bobby continues to expand his discography. His most recent recording is Quantum Man (Dot Time Records, 2016) which features a Jazz Quartet, String Quintet, Voice, and Percussion. As said by Downbeat (receiving 4 ½ stars): “Even at its most abstract, the highly textured, refreshingly unpredictable Quantum Man is persuasive and moving”. Quantum Man was also chosen “Best of 2017” by Downbeat. Follows is Short Stories (Origin Records, 2014) featuring Aaron Goldberg on the piano, Way of Being (Arabesque Records, 2013), Grass Roots Movement (Arabesque Records, 2011) featuring guitarist Nir Felder, and Modern Times (Arabesque Records, 2009). Modern Times featured Kenny Werner on piano and Sean Jones on trumpet. Bobby’s Unspoken Dialogue (Playscape Recordings, 2007) featured Kenny Werner, as well as Jamey Haddad on drums, Ben Street on bass, and Paul Tynan on trumpet; all musicians Bobby has actively performed and recorded with over the last 10 years.
In addition to playing alto saxophone, Bobby also plays soprano saxophone, alto clarinet, flute, and is a composer, arranger, and jazz clinician. Bobby Selvaggio is an Eastman Saxophone Artist and a Jody Jazz Mouthpiece endorser.

At the end of his high school year, he won the Woody Herman Jazz Award at Redondo Union High School. During his undergraduate, Joshua played in the Biola University big band and had also won multiple soloist awards from jazz festivals. Woody Witt is an impressive tenor saxophonist, a skilled composer, and an influential jazz educator. On the tenor, Woody displays a mastery of modern mainstream jazz, he has developed an energetic and explorative style, and he has his own attractive sound. Whether it is his recordings (most recent is a live improvised trio recording from Cezanne as well as a quartet recording of Taiwanese and Chinese songs recorded in a standard jazz quartet format), his playing on worldwide tours and locally in Houston, or his enthusiastic and informative workshops, Woody is making a strong impact on the current jazz scene.
Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Woody Witt remembers hearing his father's recordings of such country artists as Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. "My father played guitar semi-professionally when he was young. I started on the clarinet in the fourth grade and the following year I started playing the saxophone." His older sister introduced him to the music of Return To Forever and Woody also remembers hearing Chuck Mangione and Grover Washington Jr. "The first straight ahead jazz concert that I saw was Wynton Marsalis when he had the group with his brother Branford, Kenny Kirkland, Bob Hurst and Jeff 'Tain' Watts."
Woody Witt started playing professionally when he was 16, performing at weddings and private parties. He also played many duo and trio gigs, learned a countless number of tunes, and regularly attending the jam sessions at a local club, Kilgore's. When he first enrolled at the University of Houston in their honors program with an academic scholarship, it was to study electrical engineering. However after a year, Woody knew that his life's work would be as a musician. He switched majors and dove into music full force. After graduating, he earned a Master's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas and a Doctorate from the University of Houston's Moores School of Music. Along the way he performed locally and began his teaching career.
After earning his doctorate, Woody taught for a year at the High School of Performing and Visual Arts in Houston. "I soon realized that that type of teaching position was not what I wanted because it took me away from performing." Since then he has balanced his performing and teaching careers, Since 2003 he has taught fulltime at Houston Community College, has been an Affiliate Artist at the University of Houston, and has traveled the world conducting workshops and master classes including in Houston, Alabama, New Mexico, Alaska, California, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, France (including Paris), Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Romania, Germany, throughout Asia and Taiwan. "Teaching is very rewarding. I have had some wonderful students and I have had the opportunity to witness their successes; some have made great careers for themselves. I stress fundamentals, basic musicianship, the importance of training one's ears, developing one's own sound on the instrument, a full understanding of harmony and melody, and the need to be versatile."
Beyond his teaching, Woody Witt has had a consistently busy and productive performance career. He has collaborated with such greats as trumpeters Randy Brecker, Tim Hagans and Jim Rotondi, saxophonists James Moody, David Liebman and Tim Armacost, trombonist Conrad Herwig, pianist Mark Levine, drummers Louis Hayes, Adam Nussbaum, Billy Hart, and singer Nancy King among others. Woody has also performed in a duo and several quartets with pianist Joe LoCascio over the past 20 years. A major force in the Houston area, Woody has worked with the Houston Symphony, been featured at Pops concerts, and currently leads a saxophone quartet that includes three other saxophonists who are primarily classical players. And while he uses Houston as his home base, Woody has performed throughout the United States (including New York City, Chicago, Minneapolis, New Orleans and Alaska), Japan, Taiwan, several countries in Europe, including two tours of France.
In addition to recording over 25 CDs as a sideman in his career, Woody Witt began recording as a leader in 2001 with his self-titled debut. Since then he has recorded Square Peg Round Hole (a quintet set featuring Randy Brecker and pianist David Kikoski), Live At Cezanne's, A Conversation, Willows, Seasons Ago, First Impression, Pots And Kettles, Absinthe, Presence with long-time collaborator, pianist, Larry Ham, Live At Cezanne (a trio set with Glen Ackerman, bass, and Daniel Dufour, drums) and Made In Taiwan, a collection of Taiwanese and Chinese songs arranged for a jazz quartet, recorded in Taipei, Taiwan. "All of my CDs have special memories for me, documenting me at different periods in my career. I particularly am proud of my duo recordings with Joe LoCascio (Seasons Ago and the recent Billy Strayhorn tribute, Absinthe). Joe has such a sophisticated harmonic palette that is very colorful and he is a bold improviser. Musically we can go in any direction together."
Among the other highlights in his career was winning the 2010 Chamber Music America French American Cultural Exchange grant, which resulted in a ten-day tour of France and an extensive tour of the United States that included pianist Frank Amsallem. Woody's First Impression CD, which features Amsallem, finds him adapting music from the French impressionists into a jazz setting. Recently, Woody won a prestigious International Jazz Saxophone Competition in Taiwan. Woody spent time recently in Taiwan performing, recording and conducting master classes. He has also been the featured soloist in third-stream works that cross the boundaries of jazz and classical music on pieces by the notable composer Dr. Robert Nelson including "Up South" and "Three Musicians."
And, as if his schedule was not crowded enough, earlier this year Woody Witt resumed the responsibility of booking and being the artistic director at Cezanne's, Houston's main jazz club. He had booked Cezanne's previously for ten years including bringing in such top names as Randy Brecker, Tim Hagans, Mark Levine, the Moutin Reunion Quartet, Eddie Gomez with Jimmy Cobb, and the New York Standards Quartet along with many regional and local jazz talents.
Woody Witt, is enthusiasticabout the future. "I am involved in several different groups including aquartet of young musicians from Austin, performing with Joe LoCascio, and being part of a unique trio with saxophone, guitar and drums that is inspired a bit by the Paul Motian Trio, although with different music. I also work fulltime as a teacher, leading two big bands at Houston Community College, and I book Cezanne's. I stay busy! For the future, I just want to continue what I am doing, be able to travel more, make more recordings, and collaborate with a variety of talented musicians."
With the release of Absinthe, Woody Witt is currently at the peak of his powers. He has continued to grow as a creative improviser and a force in the jazz world, never resting on his past accomplishments. His career and his music are well worth following closely.

Daniel Ridder learned to play the trombone at the age of 15 in his native Sauerland. During his carpentry apprenticeship he switched to the tuba and then became a conscript in the Symphonic Concert Band of German Armed Forces (Musikkorps der Bundeswehr). After auditioning for the Students Band of German Armed Forces in Hilden, his decision to become a professional orchestra musician matured. In 2004, Daniel Ridder began his music studies and graduated in 2009 and in 2009 he completed his studies as a graduate orchestral musician with Prof. Hans Gelhar and Prof. Hans Nickel at the Robert Schumann Musikhochschule in Düsseldorf with the highest grade of 1. At the same time he studied tenor tuba/euphonium as a subsidiary subject. Also very successful.
In addition to his main job as principal tuba player in the Musikkorps der Bundeswehr Siegburg, he is regularly engaged as a substitute with various well-known orchestras, including the WDR Funkhausorchester Cologne, Staatstheater Oldenburg, Sinfonieorchester Münster, Duisburger Philharmoniker, Südwestfälische Philharmonie Hilchenbach, Bergische Symphoniker, Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. In addition, Daniel Ridder has made an extraordinary name for himself through numerous CD and solo CD recordings, as well as solo concerts at home and abroad. After winning an audition at the Staatstheater Oldenburg in 2013, he nevertheless decided to remain active in the Musikkorps der Bundeswehr and continued his passion for opera and orchestral literature in a wide variety of orchestras. Concert tours have taken him to South Korea, China, Brazil, Africa, Russia, Ukraine, the Netherlands, France, Spain, the USA, Norway, Austria and Turkey. In 2014, he was appointed by the Richard Wagner Association as a scholarship holder at the Bayreuth Festival. This time had a great impact on him and broadened his musical horizons.
In addition to his orchestral activities, Daniel Ridder has passed on his accumulated knowledge in recent years in top-class workshops or master classes for low brass, including with Prof. Hans Nickel, Prof. Andreas Hofmeir and the German Tubaforum. At the Musikhochschule Münster, together with the lecturer for trombone, he passed on his experience in orchestral playing with great success. In his free time he teaches and has already helped several young people to make the leap into music studies. His special focus is the promotion of amateur music in his region. In cooperation with the Adams company from Holland, he is currently working on a model of a contrabass tuba and is a proud endorser of this company. He has also developed his own series of mouthpieces for bass and contrabass tuba with a well-known mouthpiece maker. Since 2021 Daniel is proud Artist of the Eastman Company too!
In his spare time he is very enthusiastic about the history of the tuba and its instruments. Many of these rare instruments are in his private collection. At the beginning of 2021, his tuba book "Total - Tuba" will be published by a well-known publishing house, containing 31 exercises by himself and international tuba players and professors. Daniel Ridder continues his education in workshops, master classes and professional brass ensembles, e.g. the WDR Brass Band Cologne.
He has been playing in professional brass ensembles in his home region for over 15 years. He also plays in tuba quartets and large brass formations. This gives him an enormous repertoire in the field of chamber music. Some arrangements of his work around the low brass are available in music publishers. Daniel Ridder always keeps in close contact with various professors at conservatories in Germany and abroad.
